Potosí to Uyuni

A canyon on the way to Uyuni

We spent three days conquering the 204 km road from Potosí to Uyuni, which took us past some of the most awesome and diverse natural scenery we have seen on this trip.

Leaving Potosí’s silver mines in the dust (no pun intended), we were surprised by how cold Bolivian winters can be even during the day.

The first day we mainly spent climbing hills and curling our toes (to keep them warm). Frustrated by our slow progress (only 45km), we set up camp just after sunset.

The following day we cashed in our reward from the day before: a downward cruise featuring some epic rock formations and a canyon.

10 points if you can spot a scary rock looming over the road

Visigza

For lunch we stopped in the small farm town of Visigza, which (as a friendly old lady explained to us) houses a population of 98. Despite its size, it had a small local restaurant offering a full menu (soup and main dish for 10 Bolivianos)! After a warm “milanesa” (typical Bolivian dish comparable to a Wiener schnitzel), we exited llama land and entered cactus land. We decided to spend the night in Tica Tica, a small town 80 km out from Uyuni.

On June 4, we finally hit the 1000 km mark! We also saw some wild vicuñas.

1000 km!

After another 80 km (and another challenging climb), we arrived in Uyuni just in time for a beautiful sunset over the flat plains.
