Sunset on Lake Titicaca in Copacabana

Operation: Bus ride to Copacabana.

Status: Success!

The four-hour bus ride from La Paz to Copacabana went smoothly (aside from the fact that we had to get off the bus and watch it cross the lake on a very iffy-looking raft). The small town of Copacabana offers a (literally) golden view of lake Titicaca (which is the coolest name ever for a lake). Unlike La Paz, it is not crowded with traffic—except for at the bus station where you’ll constantly hear drivers waving and shouting “A La Paz a La Paz a La Paaaz!” Again the traditional clothing worn by the locals stood out to us.

On one of the four days here we hiked to the Horca del Inca, a pre-Incan astronomical observatory composed of two stone pillars and a stone cross beam. We also climbed our way to the very top of the hill (4100m elevation) to take some nice photos :)

On our second to last day, we spent the morning hiking across the Isla del Sol, an island in Lake Titicaca. The views of the mountains (and llamas) were fantastic!

After four days of further adapting to the altitude (3800m), we’re finally ready to cycle!

  1. I like seeing the llamas and alpacas. And yes, Lake Titicaca was the best place to learn about as a second grader and get all the kids giggling, two good (bad) slang words in one name!
